NJ1K peak map Park at the parking area for Buttermilk Falls on Mountain Road off the NPS road in the Delaware Water Gap. Mountain Road is not easy to find and it is very rough. Cross the road from the parking area and stop by the highest falls in New Jersey. At Buttermilk Falls the water cascades down over a rocky "cliff" and is much more impressive in the spring or after a rain. Climb the steps at the Beginning of the Buttermilk Falls Trail. Stop at the observation platform if you wish and then cross the bridge at the top of the falls. The trail continues with steep section and the elation gain is about 1100 feet in 1.6 miles. At this point the trail joins the AT. Bushwhack south and slight east to the transmission tower at the top. The high point is just east of the tower. Return by reversing your route back to the parking area.

(The map at the right shows the parking area and the hiking route in a clockwise direction.)
