Where are the maps?

One way to hike Rose Mountain is to hike the Rochester Hollow Trail from Route 28 just west of Big Indian near the Belleayre Ski Area. This trail is on state land as is a nice hike in its own right. In the winter the trail is frequented by snowshoers and cross country skiers alike. Although you can park on state land to hike Rose Mountain, ALL of the summit of the mountain is located on private property. Make sure you contact the owner of the property to get permission to hike.

The Rochester Hollow Trail follows a wide woods road for about 1.7 miles where it begins to head west. Rose Mountain is north of this point. Just off the trail, and still on state land, is a series of stone walls and foundations. There is also supposed to be a plaque Honshu John Burroughs. This was all covered in snow when I was there so I probably will return in a season without snow. The rest of the hike is a bushwhack of about 1.3 miles to the highest spot on the mountain. There are some woods roads along the way which help. Did mention that the summit is PRIVATE PROPERTY? Getting permission to hike this peak is well worth the effort as there are some nice views along the way. The actual highest point has no view.
