Churchill Mountain is located just south of Stamford in Delaware County. It is only accessible by bushwhacking and much of the surrounding land is privately owned. To get to a parking area, drive along Route 23 near Stamford. Watch For Mountain Avenue which becomes Tower Mountain Road. This road can also be used to access Mount Utsayantha which actually has a dirt road that runs all the way to the top! Continue to drive south for about .65 miles and watch for DEP signs on the left side of the road. Park on the side of the road near the signs. Begin the hike by walking up through the field toward an old spring house. The field and the area near the spring may be wet. Head west and then northwest watching for old woods roads that will take you UP. During most seasons this mountain has an ample supply of prickers and many of the woods roads are full of blowdown. Work your way around some ledges and up to the highest point on the mountain. The summit is usually covered in prickers and has no view. Return on the path you used to come up or follow another road back. Be careful to avoid the private property that adjoins the public land.
